What will happen if I take part in
this research study?
If you volunteer to participate in
this study, the researcher will ask you to do the following: meeting the
researcher for an individual interview, at the premises of a location of your
choice. The interview will be recorded (audio version).
The questions of the research will be
explained to you before conducting the interview. The interview guide will be
structured around the following principle themes: 1) academic performance and
social insertion of adolescents at school; 2) their social experiences outside
of school; 3) family-school relations; 4) parents educational strategies; 5)
community-school relations.
How long will I be in the research
study?
Participation
will take a total of about 1 hour.
Are there any potential risks or
discomforts that I can expect from this study?
Your participation in this research
does not involve any particular risks or disadvantages.
Are there any potential benefits if
I participate?
You will not directly benefit from
your participation in the research. However, the results of the research may
improve the school experiences of secondary school students of South Asian
origin, in particular, and of immigrant origin, in general, in North America.
Will information about me and my
participation be kept confidential?
Any information that is obtained in
connection with this study and that can identify you will remain confidential.
It will be disclosed only with your permission or as required by law.
Confidentiality will be maintained by means of allotting a number to each
participant. Only the principal researcher and/or person delegated to this end
by the principal researcher will have the list of participants and the numbers
given to them. Moreover, your information will be kept in a locked
computer/filing cabinet located in the office of the principal researcher at
UCLA. No information making it possible to identify you in a way will be
published. You will be able to review, edit, and erase the tapes/recordings of
your research participation before any publication is done. Your information
will be destroyed seven years after the end of the project and only data not
making it possible to identify you could be preserved after this date.
What are my rights if I take part in
this study?
· You can choose whether or not you
want to be in this study, and you may withdraw your consent and discontinue
participation at any time.
· Whatever decision you make, there
will be no penalty to you, and no loss of benefits to which you were otherwise
entitled.
· You may refuse to answer any
questions that you do not want to answer and still remain in the study.
